NEW WIND FARM COULD CREATE ENERGY ENGINEERING JOBS IN THE NORTH SEA

NEW WIND FARM COULD CREATE ENERGY ENGINEERING JOBS IN THE NORTH SEA

New wind farm could create energy engineering jobs in the North Sea Airtricity, the renewables development division of Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), has been granted permission to construct a new offshore wind farm off the coast of The Netherlands.

Breeveertien II, which will consist of up to 97 wind turbines and have an energy capacity of around 350 megawatts, will be built 60km from the coast of Ijmuiden in the North Sea.

Airtricity chief executive Paul Dowling said that the project, which could create new engineer jobs, represents a "major achievement" for SSE.

"The Dutch market is an important new area for SSE's renewable development team and the West Rijn and Breeveertien II sites will give us the potential to become the leading offshore wind developer in The Netherlands," he said.

Airtricity won consent from the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management to build the West Rijn wind farm on January 15th.

Furthermore, the energy company has been granted consent to build wind farms at Arklow in the Republic of Ireland and Butendiek in Germany.

It was announced today (February 26th) that Airtricity has formed a consortium with RWE npower renewables and Norwegian companies Statkraft and StatoilHydro in an attempt to win the right to build additional wind farms.
