August’s version of our monthly updated green job board league table is below.
As ever the table is based on (job seeker) traffic data (accurate as of today) provided by Alexa.
Traffic data being one of the most accurate indicators of a job board’s performance over a period of time, and clearly a very important indicator for employers and recruiters when reviewing marketing spend.
Inclusion guidelines:
- Only specialist job boards are included (not Monster / CareerBuilder etc) as it is not possible to determine the volume of traffic relevant to green jobs. Specialist job boards where a significant volume of relevant traffic is ‘green’ related are included.
- All included sites must be first and foremost a job board. Sites which include job listing but which are primarily something else such as a blog / information site etc (TreeHugger, GreenBiz etc) are not included. Sites must include job search facilities in a prominent position within their home page.
As ever is you are aware of a site you believe we should be listing as part of our monthly update please contact me directly and the site will be reviewed before the next league table is published on the 1st of September.

These listings are interesting, but the order/ranking still isn’t very reliable. Our site, http://GoodWorkCanada.ca should be much higher, but because we don’t meet some of Alexa’s assumptions, it appears lower than it should. I suspect http://Eco.ca should also be higher. I encourage employers and job seekers to check out all sites in their geographic area, irrespective of their position in these rankings. Thanks for your interest in green and renewable jobs!

Peter,
Thank you for your comment.
I am sure there are many website owners who believe there site should be higher.
The methodology used by Alexa is generally considered reliable. I can’t think of any reason the sites you mentioned should perform any better or worse than any other site listed as part of this process other than because they have more or less traffic.
The methodology used for each is the same as are the user groups, the results have been consistent since we started publishing the league table some months ago.
Thanks again.
Sam
Sam,
Thanks for your response — you’re probably right that most of the listings are okay. Ours is an exception because the domain you’ve measured is not our primary domain.
Alexa actually ranks us 259,840 — not 1,342,360 as shown in your list. Our main URL is Planetfriendly.net, which is where all but one page (GoodWork’s homepage) resides. If you go to either URL you will see what I mean. There are historical reasons for this, unfortunately it would take a lot of work to redesign.
My apologies that I didn’t figure this out earlier!
- Peter Blanchard
Which is to say… GoodWork ranks #5, not #25. Would it be possible to correct this?
- Peter
Peter,
PlanetFriendly would not qualify for entry into our league table as it does not meet our criteria as published with each edition of the table (it is not a job site, it is rather a site linking to a job site and also covers property, events, volunteer opportunities etc).
The two domains you own appear distinct . We are not collecting and aggregating traffic data for all the sites owned by webmaster, only job sites which meet our criteria, as your domains are distinct and Alexa is collecting data on all traffic routed via your job site regardless of origin (PlanetFriendly, Google, wherever) it seems that that the data is relevant.
Kind regards,
Sam
By the way, I wouldn’t be troubling you about all this if I wasn’t concerned that this table is being abused by others in a seriously misleading way. It’s sad, but when anything becomes trendy it attracts some players who are in it for “different” reasons.
Sam, I assume you’re publishing this because you genuinely care about renewable energy. If so, please reconsider your methodology or my suggestion from last month to simply list geographically, rather than a monthly horse-race. Otherwise you risk doing a sad disservice to everyone who works for green energy and a green economy.
- Peter
No Peter…. Alexa collects data from any page on your job site (not just one page). So any page I.E. http://www.yourjobsite.com/whaterverpage. No page on your job site is missed, the Alexa ranking is the same for every page on a particular domain.
It is unlikely that Alexa’s data is perfect but it is, publicly available and widely considered a valuable, respected and valid source of traffic data (and I know of no better source)
This is the same for all sites. Many other sites have other larger sites that feed them traffic or that they are associated with. We are only interested in job seeker traffic and therefore only track traffic from stand alone job sites and sites that are clearly and primarily a job site. It is then for readers to use the data as they see fit and to suit their needs. Users only interested in Canada for example many ignore all listing bar those focusing on the Canadian market, they may be interested in Global sites (or not), the decision is theirs, the geographical focus is listed and how much weight a user puts on that data is entirely up to them.
I am not entirely sure how this data can be misused but I assure you are intentions are simply to provide some quantitative data on traffic numbers within a very young corner of the recruitment industry with very little high quality data available.
Sam, I’m only asking you to accept responsibility for what you publish, and to consider the effects it’s having on others. The reputation of organizations who have worked long and hard in this field are at stake. If you’re going to “rank” green job sites in a useful way, you need to go deeper!
But it’s hard to continue this discussion any further, when some of the discussion has been moderated out (dispite containing nothing offensive or objectionable).
Where do we go from here?
Thanks Peter for all your feedback.
Your responses have not been edited and none have been deleted to date. We are ranking on traffic using data provided by Alexa, and we make no claims above or beyond this.
Unless you have another point to make however I believe this may have run its course.
My email address is sam@renewableenergyjobs.com in case you wish to email me directly with any additional points / suggestions.
Thanks again.
