Green job board league table - June 2009

Thank you for the great feedback following the publication of our first green job board league table in May. As promised here is June’s table.

Just as we did in May we have listed the top 35 green job boards using traffic data as provided by Alexa.

Job seeker traffic is the life blood of any job board in any sector. Beyond traffic it is then for employers and recruiters to make a judgement on the relevance of that traffic for their job vacancy, agency or business. To improve the likely relevance of job seeker traffic we currently have two rules for inclusion in the tables. To be included sites must be:

1. a specialist job board with a significant and obvious focus on green / renewables jobs (generalist job boards such as Monster / Career Builder do not qualify for inclusion)

2. primarily (and obviously) a job board, with job search facilities displayed prominently on the sites home page (Sites such as Treehugger or GreenBiz which are primarily blogs with job search facilities do not qualify for inclusion)

Data was taken from Alexa today (June 1st). As ever if you are aware of any sites that we have not included in this table please do contact me directly. All sites will be considered for inclusion, the next table will be published on the first of July.

  1. Thanks for this list, it’s an interesting start! In Canada,
there are two much larger sites:

    (1) http://www.GoodWorkCanada.ca (green jobs in all sectors)
    (2) http://www.ECO.ca (environment industry & technical positions)

Both of these are long-running sites that specialize in green
    and environmental jobs.

P.S. I really wonder about Alexa’s assumptions and methodology.
When I look at their numbers for sites I’m familiar with, it’s
really no basis for comparison. Maybe a simple listing by region
would be more accurate and just as valuable? Or if you really
need to “rank” sites, the number of jobs posted might be a
    more reliable criteria.

    Hi Sam,

I was looking through the recent league table and noticed that “energyplacement.com” are more of a recruitment company than a job board, is this correct??

  3. Sam Newell says:

Peter - Thank you for your comment - I will certainly take a look at both before publishing July’s table. Alexa is the authority on website traffic that I am aware of however if you are aware of a better source then please do let me know. Alexa are certainly well known and considered a respected source of data. I agree that geographical focus is an important consideration for both job seekers and recruiters and so this information has been included in the table. My hope is that it is a simple enough format for recruiters / job seekers with an interest in a particular geography to simply use the data that is relevant to them and disregard that which is not.

Mark - Thank you for that. We will take another look before we publish the next version.

    All the best,
    Sam

    Hi,

TechnicalGreen didn’t make the list. We should be the next one after CoolClimateJobs from what I can tell. :-D

  5. Thanks for your reply.

My point is that automated guesses/extrapolations can have little
to do with actual traffic data, which is usually private. While it
might be a convenient way to find a quick list of sites, automated
rankings can be misleading or worse. Based on my knowledge
of the green/environmental sector and actual traffic data, I know
that reality can be far from what automated rankings seem to indicate.

Also, some sites could seem large and rank well but fail miserably
on other measures — while other large and respected players are omitted.
Today the green bandwagon is in full swing. Some are very good at
self-promotion and numbers, while others continue to be motivated
by sustainability and used by large green/environmental communities.

IMHO, without in-depth editorial research, it would be better not to
rank at all. Just list the sites in geographic or alphabetic order, and
include other credible sites that the ranking missed. And if time allows,
a human-researched approach would be much more valuable than
    any automated ranking.

    Thanks again for this initiative!

  6. Scott Alexander says:

One poster suggests ranking sites on the # of jobs posted. I would suggest refraining from this approach because, unfortunately, there are unscrupulous sites that steal jobs without permission from websites just to make it look like have a zillion jobs. Because of this, you can never judge sites, other than the ones like Monster, based on # of listings. You can pretty easily gauge sites by comparing the quality of the design, etc etc. I think you will find that with the top ten sites here, they have obviously invested to make good sites. The trouble with these rankings is that people who are left off, will always disagree, especially when it’s their competition that’s high on the list. Just to be fair I doublechecked 2 sites in Canada and the only two that were neck and neck based on Alexa are http://www.eco.ca and http://www.workcabin.ca. I noticed that eco.ca was not on the list. Curiously, I also discovered that the same person who posted comments here seems to be on a mission across the web to undermine the young, but impressive Canadian site in your top ten
