Our Midlands Project and Programme Management (PPM) team comprises 40 staff predominantly based at the Arup Campus. The PPM team has built up a considerable reputation for the delivery of complex Energy projects. As part of our growth strategy, we seek to grow our PPM team in the delivery of PMO commissions both in the Energy Sector and in the Infrastructure area.

Over the last 4 years recruitment has been focused at a graduate level, and a more senior grade support is now required both to manage a mid to junior level team, and to assist in work winning activity. Significant experience in complex multi-disciplinary projects is required, in either the energy, oil and gas or infrastructure arenas is desirable.

There is significant potential to grow, and it is envisaged that this role will be required to assist in team development, mentoring staff and recruitment.

The Campus comprises several Arup businesses numbering approximately 800 staff and covering a diverse range of skills and disciplines. The Campus is a purpose built design open plan office incorporating the latest in sustainable technologies and providing a lively and engaging work environment.

Role

Project Manager to lead PMO assignments within PPM team in Campus.

The role will provide an opportunity to:

* help develop our PPM capability for Energy and Infrastructure clients

* develop best-practice within the team

* identify new project opportunities and areas of business activity for the team

* responsible for project controls and reporting including initial development of PMO controls architecture

* responsible for winning projects, initiating the project, formation of project team to satisfactorily deliver and ensuring overall client satisfaction

* to be responsible for a number of junior PMs and should be able to demonstrate ability to manage priorities across a variety of demanding client needs.

Assignments are mainly project management focussed where we support our Client from business case right through to implementation for large capital projects. A typical role would include developing and leading the Project Management Office (PMO) roles and processes in a client environment. This includes responsibility of team building, team working and leadership in the role.

You will report to the Energy Sector leader within the PPM Midlands. You will be required to be integrate into project delivery teams and work closely with technical discipline leaders, other Arup teams and other consultants / contractors as required.

General duties include:

*

Producing high quality reports and presentations in clear English

*

Managing the production of drawings, reports and specifications

*

Supervising and coordinating the work of others and coordinating work with engineers of other disciplines

*

Client and external team liaison

*

Managing and mentoring junior engineers

*

Providing technical guidance and mentoring to junior members of the team

Requirements and skills

* Typically around 10 years’ experience of working in a PMO team, ideally with experience in Energy/Oil and Gas projects, utilities or heavy infrastructure / industrial projects

* A deep understanding of all PMO functions

* Planning and organising skills

* Self-starter

* Able to work under minimal supervision

* Good communication skills

* Demonstrable ability to work in an integrated project team

* Logical decision making skills

Qualifications:

*

Achieved full corporate membership and Chartered Engineer status via an appropriate professional institution such as the Energy Institute, the Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, or the Institution of Engineering and Technology

*

Typically over 10 years’ relevant experience overall, with around 4 years’ experience working in the energy, infrastructure or oil and gas sector.

Desirable skills and knowledge:

*

Extensive experience of energy procurement (Tender Package Development, Employers Requirements, Technical Specifications)

*

Experience in renewable energy field (solar photovoltaic, biomass, wind power)

*

Up to date knowledge of developments and trends in the energy sector

*

Experience in developing business cases for energy investments and infrastructure refurbishments

*

Management and consulting skills and knowledge

*

Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)

*

Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams

*

A mix of both industry and consulting experience is desirable

*

Able to quickly develop successful client relationships

*

Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines is essential

*

Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills

*

Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges

*

Able to delegate work, manage staff and mentor engineers

*

Strong commercial awareness and an interest in economics as well as engineering
