Description

Characterization & Metrology Engineer
San Francisco Bay Area

The Characterization and Metrology Engineer will be responsible for analyzing, understanding, and working to improve device performance and lifetime in the R&D Lab and on the R&D Pilot line using a variety of metrology and characterization techniques.  These techniques will include device performance characterization techniques such as IV, IVT, CV, IR-thermography, EL, as well as techniques focusing more on material structural, electronic and optical properties such as TRPL, PL, SEM + EDAX, XRD, XPS,  and Hall measurements.    In addition to understanding the opportunities for performance and lifetime improvement based on fundamental understanding of our device physics, he or she will need to perform FA on panels to work to correct sources of yield loss or process variability.  He or she will also work closely with the Metrology Equipment Engineering team to grow and strengthen the array of metrology techniques available on-site.   This position requires an excellent understanding of thin-film PV device physics as well as extensive experience with the spectrum of techniques used in thin-film PV metrology and characterization.

Desired Skills & Experience

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Analysis of characterization and metrology data as well as use of simple, data-driven modelling, as needed, to analyze process and experimental data
  • Ability to mine device performance and process data stored in MySQL database both for fundamental process performance improvement as well as for failure analysis and process variability debugging.
  • Working with Metrology Equipment Engineering team to design or evaluate, test, and bring on-site (whether by purchasing new or building in-house) high-value characterization and metrology methods for use in R&D and pilot line.
  • Development of procedures and training + supervision of technicians and operators for carrying out characterization and metrology steps and operations.
  • Additional responsibilities could include assistance with:
    • Optical and electrical design and set-up
    • Data acquisition or data analysis programming
    • Integration of optical and electrical components
    • Mechanical design of test set-ups and integration
    • Fabrication of test stations

Experience:

MS + 3 or more years experience with metrology and/or failure analysis in semiconductor or solar fields.

PhD involving metrology and/or failure analysis in semiconductor or solar fields, or PhD + 2 or more years experience with metrology and/or failure analysis in semiconductor or solar fields.

Education:

MS degree required, physics, materials science, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering preferred.  PhD a plus.
