ENVIRONMENT TEAM LEADER

Job purpose: 

To provide leadership, management and delivery of energy environment services in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) to support the business activities of the Energy Environment Sub-division.

Accountabilities:

Principal accountabilities:
  • Lead the delivery and growth of Environment and Social services within the Energy Environment Sub-Division
  • Develop and implement Business Plans for SSA
  • Coordination of responses to Expressions of Interest, Requests for Proposals and Invitations to Tender 
  • Financial responsibility and project director/manager of large environment and social projects
  • Review and approval of sub-division outputs

Management accountabilities:
  • Line management responsibility for all team staff (currently 4 staff)
  • Accountabilities include resource planning, resource allocation; recruitment; performance management,; training and development, sickness and grievance procedures; health and safety 
  • Coaching and development of staff

Other accountabilities:
  • Responsible for compliance with quality, environment and safety systems
  • Maintain and develop The Company's team support to Power unit in the SSA
  • Work alongside other environmental teams to undertake business development, win and resource work in the most efficient and effective way for The Company
  • Deliver relevant aspects of the Sub-division Business Plan
  • Deputise for Sub-divisional manager when requested

Job Role:

Role responsibilities:
  • Project coordinator for the delivery of environmental services in the SSA region with support from wider group in UK and rest of the world; 
  • Undertake ad-hoc environmental advisory services to in-house PWR team in Johannesburg; 
  • To be a local environmental resource for all power projects managed from SA or Brighton; 
  • Contribute to the production of proposals for the region; 
  • To provide a point of contact for other group services in the region social / air quality; and 
  • Liaise with group Sub-Saharan representative to support any BD activity in the region. 

Areas of work are: 
  • Environmental and social impact assessment, environmental management and monitoring and environmental action planning.
  • Environmental due diligence and Equator Principle compliance reviews for international financing institutions;
  • Input into site selection / route selection studies; and 
  • Provide environmental advisory services as part of engineering services to developers and utilities.

Qualifications (essential):
  • Good first degree
  • Second degree in relevant discipline
  • Membership of a relevant professional body

Competencies / skills (essential):
  • Extensive relevant postgraduate work experience in environment or sustainability disciplines
  • Technical leadership - technical and analytical skills; conceptual thinking; decisiveness; customer focus
  • People management - delegating responsibilities and accountabilities; managing performance; motivating staff; creating open communication
  • Programme management - programming and planning, resource allocation; financial management; contractual acumen
  • Business development - business planning; business development
  • Communication and teamwork - speaking and writing persuasively; facilitating meetings
  • Personal effectiveness - managing time; gaining commitment

Competencies / skills (desirable):
  • Experience of line-management of environmental teams
  • Working knowledge of environmental consultancy
  • Technical knowledge of environmental impact assessment, strategic environmental assessment, social impact assessment, due diligence audits, environmental policy and legislation
  • Experience of working on African and international projects / assignments
  • Ability to develop and manage customer and client relationships
