Job Title: Head of Transmission System Planning & Investment
Location: Perth, Glasgow, or Inverness
Salary: £59,500 – £89,000 + car/cash allowance + annual bonus

The Transmission System Planning & Investment team has responsibility for the discharge of SHE Transmission’s statutory duty to operate and develop the transmission system in a technically compliant, safe, economic and co-ordinated manner.
The Head of Transmission System Planning & Investment is a senior leadership role with technical responsibility for ensuring the ongoing safe, efficient and reliable performance of the SHE Transmission network (as part of the GB Transmission System), in accordance with technical standards, industry codes and regulatory requirements. You’ll be responsible for determining the network development and investment options to meet future customer needs and performance requirements, in the context of evolving industry codes and network planning approaches, and preparing the business cases to justify selected investment options. You’ll need to be able to strategically read the energy landscape, work with internal and external stakeholders to build the business case for high value (+£1bn) network investments, and provide leadership and inspiration for future opportunities for electricity networks.
In addition to demonstrating strategic leadership working with the SHE Transmission management team, the Head of Transmission System Planning & Investment will lead a team of c.30 highly qualified, technically expert Engineers and Commercial Contract Managers.
Your Skills and Experience
You’ll have a degree in Electrical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline and ideally be a Chartered Engineer in a relevant institution. You’ll also have demonstrable experience in Network Planning, ideally in the GB Electricity Transmission sector, with strong knowledge of relevant industry and technical standards, and how these evolve. You should have a strong understanding of the industry structure, including interfaces with the Regulator, System Operator, other Transmission Owners and Distribution Networks. You’ll also have an understanding of the commercial mechanisms for investments, including statutory processes, and the Licence Obligations under which SHE Transmission operates.
You’ll have the capability to direct a highly technical team, ensuring priorities are clear, and facilitating development of capability to maintain SHE Transmission’s strong System Planning function. You’ll be able to lead innovation, both technical and commercial, to develop SHE Transmission’s business planning approach, while ensuring Network Reliability is maintained, and customer value is clear.
You should possess strong communication skills and feel comfortable communicating at all levels with the ability to present on a range of technical subjects with the ability to form structured arguments with reasoned justification to influence and guide others. You should possess the ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports and specifications, with a focus on focussed information for senior management.
The demands of this role require that you are organised and methodical with the ability to prioritise your and your team’s workload against demanding targets and deadlines.

Transmission operates under licence as Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission plc, responsible for the transmission of electricity in the north of Scotland. We own and maintain the 132kV, 275kV and 400kV electricity transmission network in our licence area. Our network comprises of underground cables, overhead wooden poles, steel towers and electricity substations, and it extends over a quarter of the UK land mass across some of its most challenging terrain.
