Description

The renewables team in Brighton and Glasgow are seeking a senior engineer with a practical understanding of renewable energy technologies and experience working in a relevant sector either in the UK and internationally.

The renewables team works across a fairly diverse profile of technologies which include the Solar PV, Solar Thermal, Onshore Wind, Offshore Wind and Bioenergy technology fields. The types of engagement we have with these types of projects ranges from front end project development studies (e.g. strategy, feasibility and due diligence), advisory work and in some cases through the project development process to owner's engineers roles at the implementation stage and beyond.

The Bioenergy sub-team of the renewables team is primarily based in Brighton although it works closely with other renewables and Power Unit staff in the Glasgow office. Hence the ideal location for candidates would be Brighton, although Glasgow may be considered for excellent candidates. The Bioenergy team has a broad remit of technology including the fields of Biogas (e.g. land fill gas and anaerobic digestion), Biofuels (e.g. first and second generation biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel and proves a lot of support to the Thermal division In Biomass and Energy from Waste projects. The application of the Bioenergy may be for generating power, heat, for transport use or even gas grid injection for biomethane.

The team also supports other subdivisions of the Power unit on carbon reduction related projects such as carbon capture and storage, carbon management and carbon lifecycle assessments. In addition, the Bioenergy team provides support to other units across the company such as Water and Environment and the Management Consultancy Division, providing specialist process knowledge on bioenergy and waste treatment technologies.

The type of engagement the team has in Bioenergy projects is similar to the renewables team as a whole and covers strategic and conceptual studies, feasibility studies, due diligence and providing technical process know how to the implementation phases of low carbon energy projects.

Engineering degree types that would be applicable for the team include energy, mechanical, electrical, civil and chemical engineering degrees. Candidates are sought who are flexible and keen to tackle projects in emerging technologies which require input across the tradition disciples of engineering. Prior work experience in one of the areas of renewables, power or energy is essential to this role. High regard would be given to candidates with further specialist qualifications in renewables or energy related topics.

Ideal candidates would preferably have a graduate level degree in process engineering with an energy specialism (i.e. chemical engineering, energy engineering or mechanical engineering with a process bent). As for the renewables team, masters level qualifications in renewables topics or similar will be highly regarded. Candidates should have a sound practical and theoretic knowledge of thermodynamics and be familiar with calculating and analysing mass and energy balances for energy production/conversion processes. Candidates should have both practical experience and theoretical knowledge in one or more energy conversion processes such as anaerobic digestion, fermentation, combustion, gasification or pyrolysis. Knowledge of waste treatment technologies or carbon capture technologies would also be considered useful.

Individuals should be motivated and flexible and with a keen interest and knowledge of emerging technologies in the field of Bioenergy. As well as technical skills, candidates should have a knowledge of the commercial, policy and regulatory drivers for renewable energy in the UK and worldwide. A sound understanding of the project development process for energy projects would also be valued. As well as contributing to the technical team, candidates should be willing to operate both in a project management role and to support the business development process for the team, including interfacing with clients and preparing proposals. Language skills will also be well regarded due to the international nature of the project portfolio.

"Due to the high volume of applications we currently receive, we are unable to respond to all candidates.  If you do not hear from a Consultant within 5 working days unfortunately you have been unsuccessful on this occasion"
