Job Title: Simulation Engineer (The National HVDC Centre)
Location: The National HVDC Centre, Cumbernauld, Scotland
Salary: £31,000 - £46,500 depending on skills and experience + car/cash allowance + annual bonus
Permanent | Full Time Hours with flexible working patterns available | 37 hours per week
The National HVDC Centre is a real-time simulation facility which supports the feasibility, specification, testing, operation and maintenance of HVDC transmission systems. By studying and simulating control interactions between HVDC and AC systems, we de-risks the development and operation of HVDC schemes. The Centre, funded through Ofgem’s Networks Innovation Competition, formally opened on 26th April 2017; providing a simulation and training facility to support HVDC schemes.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Simulation Engineer to join us, working with a team of Engineers to undertake detailed HVDC simulation studies. These studies take place in real-time using vendor-supplied replica hardware, to understand multi-infeed, multi-terminal and multi-vendor HVDC operation and interactions, for real schemes in GB; interpreting the results to gain insights to improve the design and operation of HVDC schemes.
You will be expected to engage directly with our stakeholders to understand their requirements; undertaking simulation studies (using RSCAD simulation software); drawing out the insights learnt from the study work, and communicating the results (in technical reports and presentations) to HVDC scheme sponsors and GB Transmission licensees.
This is a varied role, and a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of HVDC advances in this country.
Your Skills and Experience
You will have
- Extensive experience of power system studies
- Experience of Real Time Simulation (preferably using RSCAD)
- Knowledge of HVDC Transmission with an understanding of LCC and VSC technology; and
- Familiarity of HVDC schemes integration with AC systems.
- You’ll be a strong communicator, with an ability to relay very technical information in an easy to understand manner; and
- You’ll be able to demonstrate that you can work effectively in a team environment, building and sustaining positive working relationships.
Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE Transmission) operates this new Centre on behalf of all GB Transmission Licensees. SHE Transmission is the transmission owner responsible for the North of Scotland transmission network from 132kV to 400kV. SHE Transmission is currently constructing the Caithness-Moray HVDC scheme, and has ambitious plans for future HVDC schemes (including Multi-Terminal schemes). The National HVDC Centre is set-up to support all HVDC schemes connecting to the GB Network and beyond, in order to facilitate the integration and operation of the increasing number of HVDC schemes.
SHE Transmission is part of Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN). SSEN’s our skilled teams operate and maintain our electricity distribution and transmission networks, carrying electricity to over 3.7 million homes across the north of the Central Belt of Scotland and Central Southern England.
