Senior Mechanical Design Engineer / Fuel Cells / Surrey / Competitive salary Our client - a leading fuel cell company, is looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its team. Applicants should be dynamic professionals who are looking for a rewarding future in one of today's most exciting clean energy technologies.The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for providing engineering services to the company to develop existing products predominantly with respect to; the Fuel Cell Stack design, increasing reliably and performance of the stack and balance of plant and focusing on cost reduction strategies at component, and stack balance of plant level. These engineering services will be required to support cross functional activities between the Fuel Cell Product Development team and fuel cell stack testing team.The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer should also have experience working with mechanical systems that focus on hardware that help regulate and control fluids and gases to/from and within the fuel cell. An understanding of complex system interactions and possible trade-offs for the fuel cell stack design would be beneficial. Equally the ability to troubleshoot and articulate clear concise feedback on findings associated with assembling stack components is also expected.Location: This position will be based in Surrey, but willingness to travel to visit the company's other sites and suppliers is essential.Role and Responsibilities:* Provide well thought out and practical engineering solutions to next generation stack designs, troubleshooting and learning from incumbent design and to identify issues affecting cost and reliability before and after installation.* To assist with the design of test stands for fuel cell coupons and short stacks.* To assist in developing procedures within the Engineering department.* Support Field Service personnel as technical liaison should new issues arise.* Produce calculations to back up concepts and final designs.* Support Commercial / Business Development Group on key technical / operational issues that support acquisition of new projects.Skills and Experience:* 8+ years of relevant experience in fuel cell and associates balance of plant design or similar industries.* Good working knowledge of CAD software - Primarily SolidWorks, including applicable drafting standard BS8888 or equivalent.* Excellent knowledge of ANSYS Simulation (or similar) Software* Familiarity with Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process and Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Hazard ad Operability Studies (HAZOP)and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA).* Good understanding of electro-mechanical components (and sensors) including, but not limited to; fans, blowers, scrubber pumps, solenoid valves, pressure transducers and thermocouples.* Professional & collaborative - comfortable speaking and working directly with the customers when required* Self-starter - proactive and persistent with well-developed analytical skills.* Hands on mentality for mechanical details and willingness to support interaction with electrical / control aspects of the design* Excellent verbal and written communication skills that include;*Ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, concise manner for both technical and a non-technical audience.*Ability to interact with all levels of an organization effectively, from facilities personnel to financial leadership.*Ability to confidently and clearly defend technical recommendations utilising sound industry standards and referencing past performance.*Proficient in MS Office* Comfortable working in a small company with the challenges this can present* Minimum qualification HND Mechanical Engineering.* Excellent core understanding of pressure, flow, expansion, compression, thermal effects on various systems* Excellent knowledge of materials with a bias towards plastics and production processes* Good understanding of sealing applications and the different types of technology available.* Ability to carry out root-cause analysisCompetitive salary in line with experience
